How Long Should You Meditate? A Beginner’s Guide

Learn how many minutes beginners can meditate, how often to practise, and when it makes sense to increase your session length.

There is no universal meditation duration. A useful session is long enough to practise returning your attention and short enough that you can approach it again tomorrow. For many beginners, consistency is the better first target.

A practical meditation length for beginners

Two to five minutes gives you enough time to settle, notice several distractions, and practise returning to an anchor. It also keeps the commitment small while you learn what posture, technique, and time of day work for you.

If five minutes feels frustrating, shorten the session. One attentive minute is still a complete practice. If five minutes ends while you feel engaged, stay there for several sessions before increasing the timer.

  • Week 1: two to five minutes
  • Week 2: repeat the same duration or add one minute
  • Later: increase gradually when the habit feels stable
  • Busy days: use a one-minute version instead of skipping automatically

How often should you meditate?

A short practice on most days can make the routine easier to remember, but meditation does not need to become another source of guilt. Choose a frequency that fits your life and return after missed days without trying to compensate.

Link the session to a stable cue—after waking, before lunch, or after closing your laptop. The cue often matters more than choosing the perfect number of sessions per week.

When should you meditate longer?

Increase the duration when you regularly reach the end and would like a little more space. Add one to five minutes at a time. Longer sessions are not automatically deeper or more beneficial, and discomfort is not proof that meditation is working.

Reduce the time if you begin avoiding the practice, becoming unusually distressed, or sacrificing sleep and important responsibilities to meet a target. Meditation should support daily life rather than compete with it.

Match the duration to the purpose

A one-minute grounding pause can fit a stressful transition. Five to ten minutes can support a daily beginner practice. A longer guided sleep session may include quiet time or ambience after the spoken instruction ends.

Choose the smallest duration that serves the current purpose. You can use different lengths on different days without losing progress.

Common questions

Is 5 minutes of meditation enough?

Yes. Five minutes is enough to practise noticing and returning attention. A repeatable five-minute session can be more useful than an occasional long session you dread.

Is 20 minutes too long for a beginner?

Not necessarily, but it is not required. If twenty minutes feels comfortable and safe, you can use it. Otherwise begin shorter and build gradually.

Can you meditate more than once a day?

Yes. Some people use a short morning practice and another pause later. Make sure the routine remains supportive and realistic.
